A GP Rating, or General Purpose Rating, is a pre-sea training course for individuals seeking a career in the Merchant Navy. It's a 6-month program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Government of India). This course equips candidates with the fundamental knowledge and skills to work in both the deck and engine departments of a ship.
Training:
The course covers a broad range of topics, including seamanship, navigation, cargo handling, and basic engineering principles.
Departments:
Trainees are prepared for roles in both the deck department (e.g., assisting with navigation, mooring operations, and cargo handling) and the engine department (e.g., assisting with engine maintenance and operation).
Career Progression:
Successful completion of the course enables candidates to join shipping companies as trainee ratings. With further sea service and qualifications, they can be promoted to higher ranks, including Able-Bodied Seaman (AB), Bosun, and even officer levels.
Eligibility:
Typically, candidates need to have passed their 10th standard with a minimum percentage in English and have a 2-year ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate from a government-approved institute.
Medical Fitness:
Candidates need to be medically fit, including having good eyesight and hearing, as per the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules.
Age Limit:
The age limit for the course is generally between 17.5 and 25 years.
Course Structure:
