The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a specialized one-year residential program designed for individuals aspiring to build a career as deck officers in the Merchant Navy. The course combines academic instruction with practical shipboard training to develop the essential skills and competencies required for marine navigation and operations.
Upon completing the course and the mandatory sea-time training, candidates become eligible to appear for the Second Mate’s Certificate of Competency Examination, paving the way to becoming a certified navigating officer.
To apply for the DNS program, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
The DNS program is conducted in two phases:
1. On-Campus Training (1 Year)
2. Onboard Training (18 Months)
Candidates serve as Deck Cadets on merchant vessels, gaining hands-on experience in navigation, seamanship, and ship operations under the supervision of senior officers.
After successful completion, candidates are eligible to appear for the Second Mate’s Certificate of Competency, conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping.
